| The Mexican Bola is a traditional pendant worn by expectant mothers and is also known as a belly or pregnancy chime. This long necklace is worn so the chime hangs on the belly and the sound of small xylophone inside the pendant comforts the baby inside the womb. The beautiful, subtle chimes can be heard by both mother and baby as the mother moves and also as the baby kicks later in pregnancy.
Generations of Mexican mothers have used the bola for its calming effect on babies during pregnancy and after their children were born. The bola is most effective in later pregnancy as babies can hear best after 20 weeks into pregnancy and the kicks are strong enough to move the chime. Choose between a black cotton cord or a black ribbon. The adjustable cotton cord can be worn fully extended over your pregnant tummy or shortened to use as a nursing necklace later. The black ribbon is a free, untied ribbon that you can tie to whatever length works best for you since pregnant bodies vary so widely. We have found that the versatility and ease of tying the necklace to suit seems to be the easiest way to make the necklace "one size fits all". After the birth, simply cut the ribbon to a nursing necklace length and retie or use your own chain for longer wear.
